ABOUT

Alice Wright Early Childhood Center is a state licensed childcare facility, licensed by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

The Carbondale Park District opened the Alice Wright Early Childhood Center (AWECC) on September 14, 1985, in memory of Alice Kelsey Wright, an outstanding teacher and a great humanitarian. Alice Wright's generous contribution assisted the District in meeting the cost of the design, construction, and purchase of new furniture, fixtures, toys, games, and playground equipment.

Alice Wright Early Childhood Center serves children from the ages of 2 years though six years of age. We have openings for both Full & Part-Time Care.

The Center opens at 7:30 am and closes at 6:00 pm.

The Center is closed for the following holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, The Day after Thanksgiving, and December 24th through January 1st.

Curriculum

The curriculum of the Alice Wright Early Childhood Center is experience-based, emphasizing a developmental approach to learning, with children as active and integral participants.

The skill levels we stress are affective, cognitive, physical, and social.

The content areas emphasized include, but are not limited to, art, dramatic play, language development, mathematics, movement, music, and science.

Weekly activities are designed according to topics of interest relating to the world in which children live.  The monthly Alice Wright Early Childhood Center Newsletter and the parent/guardian bulletin board in the classrooms will help keep parent/guardians aware of the weekly themes during the month.  It is our hope that parent/guardians will incorporate these themes in at home activities.
